We’ve never had sufficient medals to make it worth separating off the Greek entries before, so 2015 was something of a landmark for the country. Proof, too, that there’s a good deal of residual affection for Greece among the sommelier community, if the comments below are anything to go by.

The whites were more popular than the reds, with Malagouzia and, particularly, Assyrtiko attracting a lot of positive feedback. Hell, we even found a medal for a Retsina!

Rarely, if ever, has one category been so dominated by one submitter, with all but two of the medals going to Hallgarten.

Gold medal winner Food Match

Delicate complexity alongside eloquent aromatics gave Papagiannakos the first Greek Gold – and the Green Thai Curry Food Match as well. 'This is a voluptuous yet firm beauty,' enthused team leader Angela Reddin, adding: 'Citrus and herbs, beautiful mouth entry, some tart tannins evident and a huge finish.' 'Stone fruits, great citrus notes and creamy,' added consultant Michael Harrison. 'There's green and white fruit flavours, herbal notes alongside lemony hints and sunny honey,' said George Bergier of The Victorian Chop House Company.

Silver medal winner

'Watery, pale lemon colour, with dried lemon peel, pink gooseberry and oregano,' said team leader Angela Reddin of this stone fruit and spice wine, with its mineral-infused nature. 'Very herbaceous and grassy, good acidity and length,' noted consultant Michael Harrison.

Team leader Richard Bampfield MW felt this would go ‘brilliantly with fatty food’, adding: ‘Very pure, cherry nose with hints of bitters. Juicy, Campari-like flavours, very refreshing with high acidity.’ 'Complex, with small tannins, dark black fruit and a smattering of dark chocolate,' said Jonathan Kleeman of The Ritz Hotel.

Vittorio Gentile of Theo Randall at The InterContinental Hotel found: 'Delicate flowery notes, crispy palate with good intensity and a slightly oily texture,' putting him in mind of a Mediterranean evening by the sea. 'Delicate, fresh, lovely acidity,' added team leader Laura Rhys MS.

While team leader Angela Reddin found preserved lemon and 'a white balsamic kick' on the nose, adding: 'Very mineral, stony flavours sliced with lemony richness. An individual,' for Stuart Skea of Champany Inn & Cellars, it was all about 'blood orange and smoke on the nose, with a weighty, persistent palate. Very good.'

Guillaume Kaczmar of L'Ortolan was impressed by the balance of this wine, saying: 'Citrusy and floral, Muscadet-like. Vegetal, flowery aromatics with a long finish.' Debbie Smith of 21212 added: 'Stunning, rich with hints of pine needle.' 'Feel the sunshine!' exclaimed Caroline Brangé of 28°-50° Mayfair, adding: 'Match with blue cheese, or smoked mackerel salad.'

'Creamy, toasty, lovely citrus notes. Rich and complex,' said team leader Laura Rhys MS, while George Bergier of The Victorian Chop House Company said: 'Strong minerality on the nose, it's oaky, classy and peachy on a balanced palate.' 'Good value, almost Viognier-like in style, with oily richness,' said Debbie Smith of 21212.
