We are so lucky to have some of the best palettes in the country judging the Sommelier Wine Awards 2017. Here, we meet some of our senior judges who have been judging SWA for a number of years now…

What are you currently drinking?

Dutch white wines.

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?
2015 Riesling is selling very well at the moment.

What’s your favourite food and drink match?
Sparkling bonarda & Jamón Ibérico.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA?
For 4 years now.

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
France.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Out of shape!

 

Maurizio Palomba, Head of Wine and Sake at Sushi Samba Group

What are you currently drinking? 
  
Sake Daishichi from Fukushima in Japan, and Vintage Champagne.

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?
Bodega Garzon Tannat from Uruguay.

What’s your favourite food and drink match?   
I really enjoy Markus Molitor Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese with caramelised sweet bread.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?   
Reading whilst enjoying a glass or two of good wine.  
 
How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA? 
  
I have been working in the on-trade for over 15 years and judging SWA since 2012.   

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   

I do not have just one… Burgundy, Germany and Alsace are my top 3 regions.

Describe yourself in 3 words
A perfectionist, humble and generous.

What are you currently drinking?   

Currently re-visiting a previous obsession with old Chenin Blanc.

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?   
The return of the old-school - I don't think we've ever sold so much Bordeaux!

What’s your favourite food and drink match?   
New season sweet peas and a big oaky Chardonnay.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?   
I’ve just moved into a new place in Bethnal Green so most of my time off is spent exploring my new neighbourhood.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA?   
I’ve been working in the on-trade since I turned 18 and started judging SWA last year.

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
Yarra Valley, Burgundy and Barolo in an equal tie.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?   

With a good book and a well-made cocktail.

 

Chris Delalonde, Beverage Manager/Buyer at Bleeding Heart Group

What are you currently drinking?

Nebbiolo.

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?   
Blaufrankich.

Is there a current SWA medal winner that’s selling well for you at the moment?   
Santiago Ruiz Albariño.

What’s your favourite food and drink match?   
Grouse and Syrah is wonderful in the Autumn.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?   
Reading, running and sleeping.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA? 
  
24 years in the on-trade and 10 years at SWA.

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
I have a few! Top three would have to be Champagne, Burgundy and Piedmont.

Describe yourself in 3 words
Hard working, open minded and old fashioned.

What are you currently drinking?   

Riesling, all the wines from Leeuwin Estate and I’ve gone back to Bordeaux again!

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?   
Riesling and Hungarian red wines.

What’s your favourite food and drink match?   
Coddled egg with German Pinot Noir.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA?
10 years in bars and restaurants and I’ve been judging SWA for four years now.   

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
At the moment it would have to be Germany and South Africa.

 

Tobias Brauweiler, Acting General Manager at Sake No Hana

What are you currently drinking?

Any good red wine.   

What’s your favourite food and drink match?   

Dark meat with mature off dry Riesling works really well.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?   

I like to spend as much time as possible with my family.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA?
I’ve been in the on-trade for 11 years and judging SWA for three.       

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
Germany, Rheingau.

Julien Sahut, Head Sommelier at Sexy Fish

What are you currently drinking?   

Roter Veltliner Stangl 2015, Weingut Eichinger.

What’s your favourite food and drink match?
Riesling with Peking duck. I love Spicy Asian food and Riesling as a grape as so much to offer as a grape.

How do you relax when you’re away from work?  
 
I try to learn and taste new things, go to a bar and try some nice craft beer, new gin or Japanese whisky.

What on your list is currently selling well or surprising you with its popularity?   
I find people move a bit away from France with a much more open mind in terms of wine from Italy, Spain & New World like Australia, USA and the South America. What is great is that people are more open minded to try new things, which gives us the opportunity to showcase wine from new countries, regions and producers that nobody has really heard of before.

How long have you been working on on-trade and judging at SWA?   
I’ve been working in the on-trade for 12 years and judging SWA for 5 years in 2017.

What’s your favourite wine/region/country?   
I love California, there’s so much diversity in this region and so much to discover.
