Home News > April 2018 > Avocado with Bordeaux?

This year's SWA Food Match round saw new pairings including Avocado on toast and Ceviche with our Gold winners.

The Sommelier Wine Awards judging comes to and end with the Food Match, which took place at The Don Restaurant, Bistro and Bar with dishes prepared by Executive Chef, Frederick Forster.

During the second round of judging, our panel of judges select wines they've put forward as Gold medal winners all with a price limit of £13 ex VAT that they think would pair well in all types of establishment.

The whole point of the Sommelier Wine Awards is to put forward medal winning wines that are perfect for wine lists in restaurants, bars, pubs and hotels.

We therefore test the wines put forward with classic dishes, and this year felt it important to reflect the changing menu's in many venues across the UK.

Over the past few year's we've seen brunch menu's pop up across the country and whilst many would opt for coffee, our judges commented that the avocado on toast dish would pair perfectly with an English sparkling with notes of Elderflower or even a white Bordeaux full of fresh citrus and green apple on the finish.

Other dishes tasted were Ceviche, Roast Salmon, a vegetarian Risotto, Pulled Pork, Rack of Lamb, Margarita Pizza, Thai green curry, roast chicken, fish and chips, burgers, steak and a Chocolate fondant.

Our judges for the Food Match were Drinks Consultant's and team leaders, Tom Forrest and Martin Lam; Andres Ituarte, Head Sommelier at Coq d'Argent; Diana Rollan from More than Wines Academy and Competition Director, Chris Losh.

Keep an eye out for the results announcement in May to find out the final pairings!
