With judging for the Sommelier Wine Awards happening next week, we spoke to Joao Tamagnini Belo, International Business Manager at Sogevinus on their medal wins in 2017.

Why do Sogevinus enter wines into the competition?

The Sommelier Wine Awards are very relevant for us as company as they targeted the on-trade specifically. The on-trade brand presence for Kopke, Cálem, Barros and Burmester is extremely important for Sogevinus as a company, so the medals that we've won through the competition are very valuable.

What’s the best listing you’ve got on the back of a medal?

All the listings that we have managed to achieve on the back of a SWA medal are a fantastic result for us as we see a lot of high-end restaurants coming through and it saves us a lot of time.

How do you use medals won in competitions to uplift your sales and increase listings?

When we found out that we'd won medals in last year's Sommelier Wine Awards our priority was getting the message and results out to our partners in the UK, as well as other overseas strategic markets. This conversation starter with existing clients and partners is one way to attract attention to our wines and build credibility whilst encouraging the sales teams to focus on our USP’s and increase sales.
