Beginning with aromas of tobacco, red berries and cherry, the enticing balance of cedary spice and red fruits continues onto the palate with a dash of grippy acidity.'Banqueting wine,' thought Frédéric Billet, consultant. With its nice structure of supporting tannins and smooth finish,' the Rib Room's Louise Gordon spoke for all when she suggested – you guessed it – Rib of Beef!

Bramble fruit mixes with fennel, cardamom, graphite and a touch of smoke on the nose. The palate shows medium tannins and elegant cooked fruit, while the garnet tones suggest some ageing, but still a good freshness.'An amazing choice,' said Terroirs' Emilie Courtois.

A textured – and many would say, textbook – Sauvignon, this has fresh green characters of Granny Smith, zippy nettley aromas, gooseberry and lime with a streak of minerality. With its soft juicy palate and nice finish, Hamish Anderson's The Tate Group, called it 'Good entry point stuff.'

Texture's Xavier Rousset said: 'Good, but expensive. Needs drinking now.' Game was the food tip.

On the palate, consultant Sarah Jane Evans MW said: 'Very juicy, with a mocha note. Very fun - good House Wine,' while consultant Peter McCombie MW simply said 'Gutsy!' Food matches range from pub classic shepherds pie to plum crumble.

Fabulous complexity in this cool climate Shiraz. Aromas of fresh red and dark stewed fruits mix with smoke and spicy vanilla pannacotta on the nose, while the palate shows ripe fruits of the forest, smoky savoury spice notes and a fresh finish.
A big wine that split the panel. Realised as classy, it might well have gone further but for the price. Intensely savoury and smoky on the nose, with notes of liquorice, spice and stewed dark fruits, alongside ginger, paprika and black olive. Lively acidity, high but balanced alcohol, and tannins that will benefit from a spot of ageing.

Give this a swirl to release 'the aromas of black fruits, ginger spices and woody hints,' suggests Terroirs' Emilie Courtois. Creamy coconut and vanilla flavours rub alongside soft, ripe black berry and cherry fruits, with a hint of chocolate on the finish.
Inspiring notes of eucalyptus prevail on both nose and palate in this light-coloured Grenache.'The nose is quite peppery, with sweet red berries,' said Etrusca Restaurants' Luigi Buonanno.'There's great tannins on the juicy palate and good length.'

The first Gold for an English sparkler in SWA - and what a wine. The red fruits, brioche and spices on the nose open up to a complex, textured palate, with an abundant fine mousse and savoury notes. Good acids balance the experience, which closes with pink grapefruit on the finish. Obviously accomplished enough on its own, consultant Frédéric Billet recommended summer berry jelly as its perfect match, while The French Table's Stéphanie Dhont took the savoury route, suggesting scallops in bacon.

Powerful and expressive and not regarded as 'typical' New Zealand Sauvignon by some, nonetheless its expressive nature was appreciated. It has a 'savoury lees complexity' along with a 'chalky, herby character' and a 'rich mid-palate'.
While the Rib Room's Louise Gordon liked the elegance and restraint of this wel-priced, mineral-infused, cool climate PInot Grigio, the Northcote's Adam Pawlowski noted the 'very fresh nose of apples, pears and grapefruit.
