Superb value once more from Colombo & Fille. Little wonder this scored a By The Glass award too. 'Intense, focused and concentrated nose of beautiful melon, ripe peach and pear fruit, with delicate blossom notes,' said Stuart Skea of Champany Inn & Wine Cellars, 'Very Mediterannean in character. Match with sword fish and crevettes.' Team leader Simon Woods added: ‘Intense, heady honeysuckle and pear, with notes of peach and halva.’

‘Harmonious, pure savoury fusion,’ said Andrea Fasan of La Petite Maison, neatly encapsulating why Domaine Grands Amandiers picked up Gold. ‘Nice use of oak, good grip on the palate, with creaminess and long, intense floral character,’ said team leader Simon Woods, concluding: ‘Good, big, but fine and really tasty.’ 'Match with turbot, watercress, roasted nuts and a mushroom sauce,' suggested Caroline Brangé of 28°-50° Mayfair.

Gold medal winner Critics Choice

They're back and as good as ever. St Cosme's Condrieu waltzed off with a Critics' Choice award for its wonderful depth and beautiful balance. ‘Lifted honeysuckle nose and a lovely, white flower palate, ripe and full with good acidity,’ said consultant Michael Harrison, with team leader Simon Woods adding: ‘Intense and mineral with a citrus bite.’ Match with a meaty fish dish with creamy sauce, or a braised pork dish, or a pork escalope, again with a cream sauce. Decisions, decisions!

Perfumed with violets and rose petal, peaches and apricots. Consultant Michael Harrison said: ‘Good texture and mouthfeel on a big, bold palate, with noticeable oaking and a lengthy finish.' Meanwhile team leader Simon Woods noted: ‘Deep, juicy and relaxed, built on a grand scale.’
