Rosé Champagne

2016 Gold: 3 Silver: 2 Bronze: 4 Commended: 11
2015 Gold: 2 Silver: 8 Bronze: 2 Commended: 3

Our tasters rarely award more than two places on the Gold List here (and, indeed, there were none in 2014) so on the face of it three Golds was not bad going. But, as often in the Sommelier Wine Awards, it’s rarely that simple.

A look at the medal comparison to last year (above) shows that beyond our three popular winners there was less strength in depth than in 2015, with high prices not always backed up by complexity in the glass, which perhaps explains the generally lukewarm feedback.

FROM THE TASTING TEAMS

‘These were very elegant wines – very fresh for the most part, and very consistent. I do a lot of pairing with champagne – it has that character that goes with seafood.’ Andre Luis Martins, The Cavalry and Guards Club

‘This was our most challenging flight – we had a long discussion for every wine. There are many very different styles – and customers have very different expectations, too.’ Marcin Oziebly, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn

‘I had expected to be energised by the flight – but in fact it was quite disappointing overall. Our panel were split all the way and I’ve not fallen in love with any of them.’ Jade Koch, team leader

‘Sparkling rosé is very much a must in certain operations, like nightclubs, and they need it to give a competitive advantage, so there is a lot of marketing around it.’ Joaquim Alba, Aramark at JP Morgan

Sparkling: Rosé - Champagne

Moët & Chandon, Impérial, Brut Rosé -1, Champagne, France

Gold medal winner

Balance and a broad, red fruit palette of flavours set Moët's rosé apart. Plenty of fruit here for Meg Ryan of Fox Fine Wines & Spirits: 'Ripe peach, raspberry, grapefruit, strawberry. Fruit-forward style with good balance and moderate acidity.' 'Crisp, refreshing and zingy,' added team leader Andrea Briccarello, of this posed sparkler, with its lemon-, apple- and red-fruit-infused finish.

£33.50 Moët Hennessy

Charles Heidsieck, Rosé Réserve -1, Champagne, France

Gold medal winner

Oeil de Perdrix in colour, the poise and talent shone through, scooping Heidsieck Gold. 'Some savoury yeast notes on the nose, leads to a soft, strawberry palate, with light, savoury Marmite notes, and a beautiful fresh finish,' said team leader Tom Forrest. A fuller style, as Carlos Ferreira of The Sign of the Don described: 'Very good nose with spicy almond and oak. Crispy acidity and toasty oak on the palate, spicy from the oak ageing, with a great, lengthy orange peel after-palate.'

£36.32 Liberty Wines

Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Rosé 2006, Champagne, France

Gold medal winner

Power, richness and spice shone through in this 10-year-old vintage champagne. Andre Luis Martins of The Cavalry and Guards Club highlighted its 'light raspberry and gentle pear character, elegant body and strawberry with a delicate finish', while The Sign of the Don's Carlos Ferreira was impressed with its 'spicy almond and dried fruit aromas, fresh toast and a beautiful expression of mixed floral and red fruit flavours with a very long finish', and team leader Tom Forrest appreciated the 'brioche and pastry notes, the nice savoury yeast and fruit notes'.

£140.63 Hatch Mansfield, Matthew Clark

Vranken Pommery Monopole, Pommery, Apanage, Rosé -1, Champagne, France
