New World: Cabernet Franc

2017 Gold: 1 Silver: 2 Bronze: 0 Commended: 3
2016 Gold: 3 Silver: 4 Bronze: 1 Commended: 3

Last year single-vineyard Cabernet Franc appeared out of nowhere to justify a category (and three Golds) of its own, receiving rapturous reviews from our tasters in the process. This year, it was a lot more subdued. Fewer wines than we’d have expected, only one Gold and, oddly, not such positive feedback.

Not that Salentein will care. This was its second Gold in two years.

FROM THE TASTING TEAMS

‘These were a lot bigger than Loire Cabernet Franc, and you’d be having a completely different sort of meal: stews or beef on the bone. Then you’d need a siesta!’ Jade Koch, team leader

‘If you do the full oak treatment you can swamp the fruit with oak. So you get a nice-tasting wine but it’s difficult to find the varietal character. Most were over-extracted. Producers should go for concrete eggs or large oak barrels.’ Matthieu Longuère MS, Le Cordon Bleu London

New World: Cabernet Franc

Salentein, Numina, Cabernet Franc 2013, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

Gold medal winner

Showing plenty of Cabernet Franc typicity, Salentein’s offering walked away with Gold. ‘Blackcurrants, with leafy notes on the nose and palate, with a touch of fresh mint; very rounded and well built, balanced with a hint of black peppery spice, and quite classic in style,’ praised Piotr Artur Tomaszewski of Buddha Bar, while Matthieu Longuère MS of Le Cordon Bleu London found it ‘full bodied and concentrated, well made, with vanilla, black fruit, chocolate and herby notes, solid in character’. ‘Good intensity, with a balance between ageing and fruit; there are great tertiary characters like leather and earth here. This would be great with roasted lamb or duck,’ thought Wright Brothers’ Ivan Ruiz.

£19.35 Matthew Clark

Andeluna, Pasionado, Cabernet Franc 2013, Tupungato, Mendoza, Argentina

Silver medal winner

‘Definitely one for a steak,’ began an effusive Piotr Artur Tomaszewski of Buddha Bar, who ‘especially loved the Bordeaux-style nose, but this is the crème-de-la-crème of New World Cab Franc, with coffee bean and chocolate complexity, blackcurrant and mint with a touch of almond on the nose, black pepper with wood elements and great structure, good to improve for another two or three years’.

£29.46 Hallgarten & Novum Wines

Zorgvliet, Cabernet Franc 2014, Banghoek, South Africa

Silver medal winner

‘Very fragrant, ripe berries on the nose, lean and fresh on the palate,’ said Matthieu Longuère MS of Le Cordon Bleu London, who enjoyed its ‘lovely fruit, juicy cranberries and slight vegetal notes in a light and easy-drinking style’.
