Today saw the outstanding debut of Israeli wines in the Sommelier Wine Awards.

The flights of red Israeli wines proved to be incredibly popular with judges, with Team Leader and wine consultant, Angela Reddin, describing the flight as ‘sensational’ and the ‘best of the day’.

Judges were equally impressed with California this year, particularly the flights of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and blends. The value for money on these wines was what really impressed and judges were pleased to see them scoring unexpectedly high on this criteria.

Senior Judge, Andre Luis Martins, Head Sommelier at the Cavalry and Guards Club, commented: ‘The entry level was ticking all the boxes and showing typicity. Higher up you get more richness of flavour.’

Similarly, English sparkling wine was praised for its value for money, with the flights performing well for the second day in a row for this category. Judges commented that quality throughout the price range was excellent, with some competing at prosecco level.

Fortified wines are always popular with judges but today saw a lot of positive feedback for the vermouths entered. There may have only been a few but all were absolutely loved by tasters, reflecting the popularity it’s seeing in restaurants.

Southern Italian reds were not as popular today but who knows what will happen next week…
