After winning SWA Great Value Merchant in the 2017 competition, we had a few sips with Simon Zuckerman, Product Manager at Berkmann Wine Cellars who's getting excited by Chile this year...

How important is SWA for Berkmann?
Recognition from the on-trade is very important for us. Joseph Berkmann was a restaurateur before becoming a wine merchant, so the restaurant trade is deeply embedded in our DNA.

Our goal is not just to offer delicious wines, but wines that go well with food. Knowing that our wines are consistently judged as award winners by the country’s leading sommeliers is a badge that we wear with pride.

What’s the best listing you’ve got on the back of a medal?
There really are too many to choose from! We are always pleased when we see one of our more esoteric wines wins a medal, as this gives our customers the confidence to give it a go.

It is also especially satisfying when one of the judges makes the effort to seek out one of the wines that they have tasted in the competition.

What do you do with your results to uplift your sales and get more listings/better sales?
We produce a brochure for our team to show to their customers and we also highlight trophies and merchant awards through our social media channels. On top of that we feature medal-winning wines and producers in our price list.

Which regions/producers are you most excited about entering this year?
We’re particularly excited to enter the wines from Morandé in Chile this year. Chile has a reputation for being a bit staid, but Ricardo Baettig is making some really cutting-edge wines at the moment.

We’ve been passionate advocates of North America for some time, so we are bolstering our Californian portfolio as well as introducing a Canadian winery to our list.

We also have our first Australian addition for some time, with Unico Zelo – a maverick young winemaker specialising in Italian varieties from the Riverland and Clare Valley.

Last but not least, we’ll be showing several Portuguese wines that are new to our range and that offer exceptional value for money.
