The Sommelier Wine Awards are, of course, about finding great quality wines and recognising the hard work that producers and distributors do - not to mention the annual Gold Book, an incredible source of inspiration for those who work with wine.

But you can’t blame our esteemed judges for having ulterior motives. As well as the awful job of tasting all those competition entries, many of the judges kill two birds with one stone and go on to incorporate their favourite SWA wines into their own wine lists.

‘When I judged in SWA 2017, I was impressed by specific wines from the Hallgarten portfolio and have since struck up a really fruitful professional relationship with them,’ said Tanya Mann from The Vine Eno Gastro Pub.

‘They have helped me find just the right wines which I now sell by glass on a regular basis. I can't say thank you enough to SWA for this great contact.’

And Jacopo Mazzeo, senior SWA judge, award-winning writer and head sommelier at The Pig hotel, also says several entries made it onto his list - such as Brocard’s winning Chablis, supplied by Berkmann - while he is considering still more for addition in the near future.

SWA judges really are among the movers and shakers of the wine world, so this kind of recognition is fantastic news for any producer or supplier.

So, not only do the awards shine a light on exceptional products - they also deliver real-life results and gain traction in the industry for wonderful wines.
