Home News > October 2018 > ‘Judges - you make the competition what it is…’ Christine Parkinson

Head of Judging at the Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA), Hakkasan’s Christine Parkinson delivered a stirring speech to a selection of the competition’s senior judges yesterday as they began their training for the 2019 competition.

Gathering at an Orange Wines masterclass with Nic Rizzi from Modal Wines, Parkinson left the sommeliers in no doubt as to their importance and what was expected of them.

‘You guys play a vital part in getting the results right. You are the expert palates in the on-trade, with the training and education – we rely on you,’ said Parkinson.

‘Other, more junior sommelier judges can learn from you, too – it can’t be overestimated how important that is. You are an integral part to the SWA judging. You’re what makes the competition what it is.’

Uniquely amongst wine competitions, the Sommelier Wine Awards is judged entirely by the on-trade and provides training for its judges throughout the year, with this session focusing on Orange Wines as a new category introduced for 2019.

’The strength and background of our judges is our USP,’ said competition director, Chris Losh. ‘It’s what sets us apart from the rest. We’re a competition for the on-trade that’s also judged by the on-trade.’
