2015 Gold: 2 Silver: 2 Bronze: 5 Commended: 1

Tending to give wines with an inherent freshness to them, it’s perhaps no surprise that this is often a popular area for our somms, and so it proved again this year. A lot of lovely wines at great prices here that should be on the radar of any venue. And huge congratulations to Mezzacorona, who dominated the places on the Gold List, with three great wines around the £8 mark.

FROM THE TASTING TEAMS

‘Typicity and diversity. It shows the value you can get from north-east Italy.’ Kelvin McCabe, Yauatcha City

‘A really good flight. They’re not easy to sell though; you need someone willing to try something different.’ Mattia Scarpazza, Petersham Nurseries Café

‘Nice minerality and savoury fruit. They had good freshness and the tannins were well integrated.’ Gustavo Medina, Tate Britain

‘Not the most fashionable Italian wines, but this was a really good flight. They’re foodie wines, and they really delivered.’ Richard Brooks, Caroline Catering

‘They delivered an awful lot. When looking for wines at the cheaper end, people need to think out of the box. You get so much more bang for your buck from places like this.’ Natasha Hughes MW, team leader

“Very good By The Glass material: easy drinking, structured and good value.” Sara Bacchiori, Chez Bruce
