Balance, breadth and a distinctive flavour profile gave Sharpham not just England's first Gold, but a Critics' Choice too. ‘Intense nettle and green apple aromatics, interesting blackcurrant leaf complexity with light-bodied, bright, zesty flavours on the palate and a balanced, fruity finish. Crying out for seafood,’ said Mike Best of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.'With notes of confectionary, spice and sweet gooseberries, this is pure and precise,' said Roger Jones of The Harrow at Little Bedwyn, suggesting roast belly pork as a match.

Fabulously food friendly, this won friends from the start, earning itself a Critics' Choice gong along the way. ‘Long, meaty and muscular, with concentration and elegance,’ began Matteo Malquori of Hakkasan Hanway Place. ‘Crushed black olives with bright red plums and cherries, good for now,’ added Neil Bruce of Studio Alto, while Frédéric Jean-Yves Billet of Luton Hoo Hotel Golf & Spa noted: 'Violets, liquorice, confit, cherries, with perfect acidity and balance and good oak ageing.' Food tips ranged from tomato-based pasta dishes through to roast duck or rabbit.

Huge complexity lifted Darioush ahead of its competitors. Team leader Laura Rhys MS noted: ‘Black cherry, blackcurrant and bold tannins, sweet spice and plush, voluptuous character.' The Gilbert Scott’s Riccardo Guzzardo added: ‘Complex and spicy, with red fruit elegance.’ For food, 'look for bold flavours and rich sauces, or someting simple, such as ribeye steak', recommended Rhys.

'Vibrant', 'opulent', 'pretty' – just some of the descriptors that illustrate how Bogle Winery won not just Gold but a Critics' Choice to boot. ‘Light, fresh minerality showing floral notes and some white peach on the nose,’ began an impressed Charles Pashby-Taylor of Dabbous, continuing: ‘Palate moves from magnolia through to apricot, quince and just a hint of banana, with a good mineral backbone.’ Match with dishes where herbs play a key role, such as roast chicken with tarragon.

One of the treats of 2015, and a worthy Caspar Auchterlonie Award winner.'The nose of the Terrantez is sublime,' said Morgan VanderKamer of Stanley's Dublin, noting 'frangipane, crème caramel, apple pie, clove, figs, cinnamon, vanilla bean, white coffee bean, tart nectarines, apricot – it's endless!' ‘Old but feisty; has a mellow character, many spices, dried fruits and fantastic nuances,’ began team leader Angela Reddin, continuing: ‘Subtle, complex, intriguing.’ ‘Smooth palate full of spices and lovely Humidor cigar aromas,’ added Laurent Richet MS of Restaurant Sat Bains. £180/75cl

A contrasting style for the final white Portuguese Gold. Indeed, Quinta do Crasto's poise and depth gave it not only Gold, but a coveted Critics' Choice, too. ‘Notes of barley sugar and great minerality on the nose, with tarragon and herbs on a stony palate. In a Burgundy glass, great with Rockefeller oysters,’ suggested Mark Graham of Butlers Wharf Chop House, with Paolo Pivato of Luton Hoo Hotel Golf & Spa adding: ‘Smoky hints, good complexity and a long aftertaste, the minerality is strong but very well balanced with its freshness.’ Try also with veal chop marinated in Greek yoghurt and sage.

Refreshing purity of citrus flavours alongside an elegant complexity and a steely crispness gave Royal Tokaji's Furmint not just Gold but Critics' Choice.
