To hear the judges describe this, it couldn’t have been anything but Gold, with Coq d’Argent’s Andrés Ituarte finding aromas of ‘black peppercorns and earth, then a medium-weight red fruit palate – so delicious, and great value’, while Vinoteca’s Charlie Young found ‘leafy, pencil-lead aromas leading to plenty of acidity and more graphite notes on the palate, with a ripe red-fruit character on the finish’. And at the price, Winexponent’s Simon Cassina thought it an excellent by-the-glass option.
£6.55 Levin Wines
‘Honeyed, soft, creamy and appealing,’ said team leader Jade Koch of this Gold-worthy Chardonnay, finding it a ‘good, inexpensive example of New World style, lean and drying with pretty mid-palate apricot, nectarine and tropical fruits, and a refreshing finish’. Vinoteca’s Charlie Young, meanwhile, appreciated ‘almond and lemon curd aromas’ as well as ‘some weight here, but great definition, with some minerality to be found, along with very well-integrated oak’.
£7.26 Hatch Mansfield
In praise of the Gold medallist, Aurel Istrate of The Connaught highlighted ‘cherry scents, tannin grip and nice acidity’, while team leader Martin Lam found it a ‘more extracted, black fruit style with chalky tannins’. A great accompaniment for a burger, thought team leader Tom Forrest, who spoke of ‘warm, ripe aromas of berry and cherry, leading to red and black fruit with some peppery tannins, and leading to a well-balanced finish’.
£6.74 Boutinot
Taking Gold with its ‘savoury, saline and restrained’ style, according to Cheese at Leadenhall’s Robert Mason, this Sauvignon Blanc went on to have ‘a bit of weight on the palate, with fresh peach, apple and lemon confit, plus some classic pea-shoot flavours’. Street XO’s Raphael Thierry also found ‘lovely notes of mango and passion fruit on the palate, the fruits persistent and the texture smooth’, while team leader Laurent Richet MS felt it had a ‘juicy mouthfeel that makes it a fun wine by the glass’.
£7.40 Boutinot
This keenly priced Gold medallist was ‘ripe, gentle and juicy with ripe pear fruit – precise and dry with a slight hint of pumice on the finish’, said an appreciative team leader Simon Woods, while Andre Luis Martins of Cavalry & Guards Club praised its ‘white flower perfume with light tomato leaf aromas, gentle stone fruit and delicate finish’. The Don’s Carlos Ferreira found the palate ‘fresh and full of fruit, with a touch of salt’, making this ‘the perfect wine for grilled salmon’.
£6.27 Boutinot
A clear Gold winner, this was ‘modern, with lifted ripe fruit as well as leather and undergrowth’, according to team leader Laurent Richet MS, while Andre Luis Martins of Cavalry & Guards Club was impressed by ‘rich, dark cherry and light green peppers, with firm tannins and complex balsamic notes, as well as some spice and cherry on the long finish’. Melania Bellesini of The Fat Duck enjoyed its ‘soft tannins and simple, balanced style’, and thought it was ‘easy-drinking for a pub list and good with charcuterie’.
£7.57 Boutinot
Team leader Simon Woods found plenty to be impressed by on encountering this clear candidate for Gold, describing a ‘clean, crisp, juicy, really good honest style that’s toasty with nice balance’, and picking up on this blend’s 70% Seyval Blanc content, he added: ‘Has an almost Sauvignon-like herbal edge.’ ‘Classic in style,’ said Lime Wood Hotel’s Christopher Parker, going on to praise its ‘driven primary orchard fruits and wild orchid hints’.
£10.12 Three Choirs Vineyards Ltd
‘Vibrant and refreshing, and great value for money!’ began The Vine Eno Gastro Pub’s Tatiana Mann, who appreciated this Gold winner’s ‘beautiful nose of white peach, as well as some spicy and floral notes, leading to a creamy body with ripe fruit’. ‘Long and structured, with some light smokiness alongside good fruit and freshness,’ thought freelance sommelier Julio Iglesias, while team leader Laurent Richet MS saw it perfectly paired with fish or shellfish.
