‘Really charming aromas of candied fruits with good structure on the juicy, refreshing palate’ was enough to earn this Gold, according to Rémi Cousin of Le Gavroche. ‘A good house wine style,’ thought team leader Martin Lam, who described this as ‘the palest pink-salmon colour, with a pear drop nose and quite pure fruit aromatics’, while The Vine Eno Gastro Pub’s Tatiana Mann praised this as ‘elegant, with some good minerality’.
£5.69 Molson Coors
This Gold medal Sauvignon Blanc was ‘great for the price’, according to Sahar Gharai of La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge (California), who described a wine that was ‘well-balanced – floral and aromatic, with some good citrus notes’, while team leader Angela Reddin had good things to say about its ‘bright, fresh nose containing red apple and some citrus character’, going on to praise it for being ‘fresh and light in the mouth’.
£3.77 Tolchards Ltd
This excellent-value Gold winner was ‘a great gastropub wine’, suggested Street XO’s Raphael Thierry, who liked its ‘juicy blueberry and blackcurrant fruits’, while team leader Jade Koch felt it to be a ‘great introduction, sweet and savoury with a bloody character, and then sweet wild-berried fruit’. For Mattia Mazzi of Lutyens Bar & Restaurants it was ‘herby and smoky, with some light tannins to add structure, and some good length and persistence’.
£5.33 Majestic Commercial
Team leader Martin Lam found this accomplished Gold winner to have ‘attractive aromas of green apple and pear, and a vibrant mousse with more pear on a warmly spiced palate’, while Aurel Istrate of The Connaught found it ‘creamy and doughy on the nose, with acidity integrating well, and crisp and nicely fresh on the finish’. ‘Clean, elegant and refreshing, with citrus, peach and fennel notes,’ concluded Manuel Ribeiro of The Bybrook at The Manor House Hotel.
