'Amazing balance between its plentiful black fruits, acidity and ripe tannins,' began Alexandru Pastrav of Fenchurch Sky Garden, continuing: 'Aromas of bramble fruit, tea, blackcurrant and sweet spices with a long finish.' Great with guinea fowl.

Seductive and sassy, a worthy Critics' Choice Trophy winner.'Fresh green grass, kiwi fruit and light gooseberry hints on the nose,' began Spring's Peter McDaid, continuing: 'Subtle key lime sweetness with lemon and tangerine notes, freshening acidity and a lingering finish.' 'Beautifully crafted, with lots of citrus but well-balanced fruit and structure on the palate. Very rounded, with appealing richness and mature texture,' agreed consultant Sumita Sarma.

Team leader Angela Reddin said: 'Deep and dense, an uncompromising style with velvety texture and tenacious grip on the palate, showing incredible density yet great balance,' while Mahesh Nair of Charlotte Street Hotel added: 'Good, elegant red with nice juicy fruit, chocolate and cassis,' while the Brackenbury Wine Rooms' Giancarlo Cuccuru picked up on the 'inviting nose', with its leather, herb, cigar box and smoky notes.

Team leader Jade Koch found 'butter, banana and butterscotch' on the nose, commenting: 'Juicy and alive, with crunchy fruit character on the palate, coupled with moreish and elegant minerality.' 'Pure, mineral, classy nose. Intense, long, great integration and quality,' confirmed Vinoteca's Charlie Young.

Elegant and seductive, it was the fleshy, well-rounded nature of Swartland Winery's Viognier as well as its price that won it a Critics' Choice Trophy. While Luca Campi of Plateau Restaurant found 'white and yellow peach, clean, nice acidity', Carlos Ferreira of The Sign of the Don noted: 'Pear and red apple, spice notes, very fresh and balanced with a long finish.'

Exotic and unusual, this captivated from the start, giving Diren's unusual wine not just Gold, but this year's Caspar Auchterlonie Fortified Critics' Choice Trophy.'It's like Christmas,' said team leader Jade Koch, 'plenty of juicy cherries and cinnamon.' Indeed, all sorts of flavours combine on a very complex palate, with sour black cherry and hazelnut to the fore, sweetness and savoury characters, and an extremely long, deep and multi-faceted finish.'Dried figs, pear and peach notes, sweet and lively with a very good finish,' said Carlos Ferreira of The Sign of the Don, while Chris Wood of Chelsea Vintners felt it was 'extremely good value, and a great alternative' on any list'. Great balance, a 'burst of damson, cassis and kirsch' plus class gave Quinta do Vallado not just Gold but a Critics' Choice Trophy.'Full of liquorice, cocoa, tobacco and farmyard aromas which are reflected in the palate,' said Giuseppe Longobardi of The Cross at Kenilworth.'Savoury, earthy and luscious style,' agreed Sue Jones of The Harrow at Little Bedwyn, with Trangallán's Xabier Álvarez-Valdés saying succinctly: 'Amazing. Character. Terroir.'

Team leader Natasha Hughes MW highlighted its 'red berries and plum aromas with leather and spicy notes, fairly rustic tannins', while Harry Crowther of M Restaurants enjoyed its 'sweet, ripe black cherry notes, spice and old oak with a clean finish'.'Match with slow-roasted beef brisket and patatas bravas,' said the WSET's Michael Best.
